This election season feels like a dumpster fire. It seems as though the majority of people I speak with are gagging on the stench of it and feeling some kind of uneasiness as Tuesday, November 8th approaches.

So first, the Bible. Let's set our minds on the Scriptures in order to wisely discern and make our decisions. Jesus Christ is on the Throne that can't be overtaken and no matter what happens in this election cycle or in the next 100 or 1,000,000 years, He rules. He is King. No one can unseat Him or give Him counsel. He protects and preserves His people and does all that He pleases. He is good and worthy of our adoration and worship forever and ever. He loves you and I and has promised He's with us to the very end of this age. We may suffer, but He's present with us in all things. He's guaranteed His promise through the Holy Spirit's presence in our lives, which He calls "the Good Deposit." Our Father delights in His Son and His Spirit who are redeeming and equipping His people.

Paul quotes the Old Testament prophet Isaiah: "'The root of Jesse will come (Jesus), even he who arises to rule the Gentiles; in him will the Gentiles hope.' May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope." Romans 15:12-13

Peter reassures a struggling, fearful, and suffering church: "May grace and peace be multiplied to you. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look. Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ." 1 Peter 1: 3-14

At the bottom of this post I’m going to provide links to several podcasts, sermons, and websites that explore the strategic effects of votes for major party candidates, 3rd party candidates, or possibly withholding our votes in protest…(to send a message that we won’t be bought or align with either of our current major party choices).

These links have helped to guide me as I’ve struggled with what to do and why I’m going to do it.

Honestly, I've been quiet on both of the major party candidates because I'm confused and appalled at the options before us. Charles Spurgeon, a famous theologian and preacher from the 19th century famously quipped, "when faced with the choice between the lesser of two evils, choose neither.”  Whether you agree or not, this has been my line of reasoning, although I'm even uncomfortable with what a withheld, protest vote does to our country, and to us, over the next four years. There just isn't an easy clear-cut answer in this election.

With Hillary, at least we know what we're getting into (corruption). There are major watchdogs already in play for years who have her and Bill's playbook pretty well figured out (see Thabiti's blog posts below). Expect presidential overreach, attacks on the pro-life movement, religious liberty, and 2nd amendment from Hillary as President.

With Trump, we have no idea what he'll do. His major party nomination is unprecedented and what we can trust from him historically, is that we can’t trust him. He has flip-flopped on issues as they are politically expedient to his agenda and he has shown massive lapses in judgment and the content of his character toward women, minorities, and humanity in general. He claims to be a Christian while repeatedly saying he has done nothing to require forgiveness from the Lord. While Trump promises to appoint constitutionalist Supreme Court Justices, we don’t really know in the long run what he’ll actually do as President and who he will appoint. He's suggested his own sister would make a fantastic SCJ. Donald J. Trump does what Trump wants and this sets an extremely dangerous precedent for the office of POTUS. Obama has already weakened the office in this regard. Expect the unexpected from Trump as he shows every sign of a Rogue Leader.

Listen in to these podcast/blog conversations for yourself and PLEASE decide, prayerfully and with conviction, to DO something on November 8th. Maybe it's vote for a major party candidate? Maybe it’s a vote for a 3rd party candidate? Maybe it’s withholding your vote in order to send a message of low voter turnout to the Republican and Democratic parties so they will present strong, viable candidates in 2020. It is not sin to withhold your vote. I'll go toe-to-toe with anyone on that point.

Regardless of what happens in our country, the church has an incredible opportunity to continue standing firm on biblical issues and regain our prophetic voice in an increasingly darkening culture. This means you and I. We're the ones with the opportunity to stand firm.

Please do YOUR RESEARCH and do SOMETHING rather than nothing (which is still passively doing something).

I’ve posted the links below in order of how they’ve helped me think through issues.
